Elderberry syrup is one of my favorite ways to keep my family healthy. We use elderberry syrup throughout the fall and winter seasons to boost immunity since it has a lot of wonderful nutritional benefits.

I have been making elderberry syrup for my family for many years. August is usually when I make it. I start giving it to my kids a week or so before school starts. It’s great to have on hand during the fall and winter months. Elderberries have great nutrition and benefits to help boost the immune system. It tastes delicious as well! My kids rarely, if ever, complain about taking their spoonful of elderberry.

Elderberry syrup benefits

Here are a few benefits from elderberries:

  • Elderberries naturally have vitamins A, B, and C
  • Elderberries stimulate the immune system
  • Elderberries are an antioxidant
  • Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine,” called the elder tree his “medicine chest

My favorite elderberry recipe

I have read many articles from the Wellness Mama over the years and trust her opinion on a lot of health topics. Therefore, I began using her recipe from the Wellness Mama for my elderberry syrup. After watching a mentor make this syrup for me one time; I felt very confident in making my own. The rest is history. I have become an elderberry syrup maker and taker since.

How I make elderberry syrup

I purchase my organic elderberries from Amazon and the remainder ingredients from local stores. It’s important for me to use local honey as we may have some allergies from the local plants and environment. My Insta pot is my best friend as I can use the crockpot setting or insta pot settings – either work well. This last year, I did a regular batch, yet I have often doubled the batch. I love to use these little milk bottles for storing the syrup. I keep one in the refrigerator and freeze the rest. This year I handed out three bottles too close friends and family. I kept one extra jar to try elderberry gummies. One thing I would like to perfect.

Daily elderberry syrup usage

The elderberry syrup lives in the side door of my fridge. I set it on the table with four small spoons every morning when I set the breakfast table. For each child, I dip a clean spoon in the jar, they hold a paper towel under their chin, then I give them a spoonful of the syrup. The paper towel has come in handy many many times as I have spilled or dripped the syrup! I don’t want to deal with extra stains-to paper towel it is. My kids enjoy the syrup. If a family member starts getting sniffly or feeling yucky, I give them a few more doses throughout the day-frequently. Just a spoonful here and there when I open the fridge or think about it. Elderberry syrup is great to have ready to go throughout the flu and cold season.

Elderberry syrup sounds like such a simple yet powerful addition to your family’s health routine. I love how you’ve made it a daily ritual, especially with the paper towel hack—such a practical idea! Do you notice a significant difference in how often your family gets sick compared to before using it? I’m curious, have you ever tried making the syrup yourself, or do you stick to store-bought versions? Also, do your kids actually enjoy the taste, or is it something they tolerate for the health benefits? I’ve heard elderberry can be quite strong, so I’m wondering how you’ve managed to make it a part of their routine without complaints. Lastly, do you use it preventively all season, or only when someone starts showing symptoms?

My kids love the taste! We typically don’t get sick much and if we do, I boost them with extra and it helps us get better quicker!
