Take care of your boots

There are two main ways that I take care of the boots in our house. I spray our families boots with a waterproof spray and I polish them. These may sound like old fashioned things to do; but they really do extend the life of a boot. They also keep the boots looking nice throughout the years. Just take a few hours each fall to take care of your boots.

Care for your boots by polishing

Is polishing boots an old time practice? Well, maybe it is. Maybe not. I have found that if I polish my boots before the fall season they look nice and ready to wear. I am excited and feel fashionable when I put my fall outfits together. There are only a few items that you need when polishing your boots. I love this Express Shine sponge. I have it in black. I also have one that is just a sponge with no color.

I have a scuff cover and black shoe polish that I add if there are any scuffs or scratches that need to be filled in. This is just in case the sponge doesn’t quite get the job done. Use these with caution and little bit goes a long way.

Typically, every fall, I gather the family’s boots. Grab a wet washcloth a dry washcloth. Then I wipe the dust or dirt off of each boot. Then I allow them to dry fully. Sometimes I need to come back to it the next day, or leave them in the sun for a quick dry.

Then I get to polishing. Polishing takes just a tiny bit of effort. I start off with the sponge, rub around everywhere and see how the shoes shine up quickly. Then if needed, I add a bit of scuff cover or polish if there are persnickety scratches or scuffs that need an extra boost.

I then allow the boots to air dry before wearing. After this spruce up, they are so inviting to wear!

This is one way to elevate up seasonal boots, and I hope you give it a try.

Waterproofing boots

Since we live in Colorado, our fall and winter shoes sure do take a beating. I often try to negate as much as I can with polishing our family’s boots as well as waterproofing them.

I waterproof our families boots before the fall and winter season. The sprays I use are Protect-all waterproofer and Boot waterproofer. (Disclaimer: please be sure to read the bottle as each spray can be a bit different and made for various types of materials. Don’t ruin your suede boots if you use the incorrect spray!)

New shoes and boots are the easiest. Just evenly spray the waterproofer to each shoe or boot and let dry. Easy peasy!

The one that takes a bit more time are the shoes we reuse each year. When I pull out the fall and winter shoes I want to place them in the closets right away. And sometimes I do. Yet, it is very beneficial to take an extra day to clean off, polish then waterproof them!

Take the extra steps to ensure beautiful polished and waterproofed boots this season! You won’t regret the few hours to take care of your boots.
