I love to organize, even in the summer. My kids received a summer folder last week that contained a lot of things to keep them busy and all of us organized. They each have chore cards, Bible tattoo and keychain, Bible verse page, a summer chart, fun summer reading program printables, along with a bookmark. We we open these folders at the beginning of the summer with all of the goodies inside, review over the items and the kids are off to having a fun time! I also bring out a new book for everyone to enjoy and this year-tic tacs! The kid’s summer folders are a wonderful way to start off the summer.

Chore Cards

My kids really focus on learning chores around the house during the summer months. I have created, printed and laminated chore cards for the kids to work through this summer. These encourage responsibility and effort. I have even seen my kids them chip in in other areas as well. If you want to read more about these chore cards, check out my post Summer Chore Cards for Kids.

Bible Verses

The kid’s grandma gifted them this really cool Bible verse set for Easter. We decided to work through each verse a week this summer. Psalm 23 is what they are working on learning. The set comes with little temporary tattoos, a keychain, and a printable. Each week we will practice the verse and I will ask the kids to recite the verse at the end of the week and they can earn the next verse keychain and tattoo along with a special treat. You can check out the Bible verse set at Dwell Differently.

Summer Chart

Each kid’s summer folder has a summer chart. My kids pull these out and clip them to a magnetic clipboard for daily use. These summer charts keep my kids on track with getting ready for the day and various responsibilities for the house. The charts have ideas for the kids ot move their bodies, build their brains, and hep others. In our home, the kids have to complete their charts to have freedom to play on their ipads or video games. This keeps my kids organized and something to work towards. Download the PDF below or use my canva link to edit for your family!

Summer Reading Program Printables and bookmark

We often do a lot of the reading summer programs. The kid’s summer folders hold the reading logs. There are many to choose from:

  • Your local public library (Ours is Jefferson County)
  • Book It
  • Barnes and Noble
  • Chuck E Cheese
  • Our school’s summer reading program

This year we will focus on all of them except Chuck E Cheese. We often get books from the public library. There are small prizes the kids can earn from the library system. We are trying Book It this summer, my kids are excited about earning a personal pan pizza. Barnes and Noble has been a favorite for many years. Read 8 books and earn a book! This year our school has put together a small summer reading program. They have a list of recommend books and I highlighted several I think would be great for them. I will give the kids an extra incentive if they read three of my highlighted books! Several of them have already started.

I found this free reading bookmark for my children last summer. They each have this laminated bookmark that has 12 numbers. Each number will be punched as they finish a book. Once a whole row of books have been read, they earn a candy or an ice cream. My younger kids may complete their bookmark easily and start working on a new card to then start punching. Each child will go through their card at a different pace depending on how long their book is and how many books they go through each week. My goal is to encourage reading and make it fun. The reading bookmarks are simple to make. I printed them out on white card stock paper. Then I cut out each card and laminated them so they are durable and last for the summer.

Reading bookmark

I ask my kids to read every day and they may not do electronics or iPads until their reading time, chores and summer chart is completed. We currently do our bulk reading time in our quite time hour. I ask that they each read about 20 minutes then play quietly for the remainder of the hour. I allow the kids to read all over the house, and outside somewhere. They can choose Grandma‘s porch, in the tree house, on a swing-really anywhere.

Using the Folders

Each week I will touch base on the kid’s summer folders. We will catch up on our reading goals. Then, we will go over how the chores are going and if we need to move on to the next chore. I will also have the kids recite their Bible verses. These folders keep us organized and everything can have a home.
